Let’s Celebrate…being loved (1 John 4:16)
God is love. We know from Jesus’ life and teaching that God loves us. Our communal experience is that love is vital for human well-being and healthy growth. When we live as loving people we are living as God intends. So how shall we live together in love for these few days? How shall love be expressed across our different language groups, cultures and nationalities? How do we live lives of love in the families, neighbourhoods and countries to which we belong?
Thursday
Let’s Celebrate…being young (Luke 18:16)
God became human and began life on earth as a child. Jesus teaches that there is something special about being a child, in fact adults should keep children in their midst so that they can see them and learn from them, because unless they receive the Kingdom of God as a child, they will never enter it. During this Festival let’s try new and young things, learn to see the world from a fresh perspective, be open, trusting and happy to ask for help. Let’s be reminded what it is to look at the world through the eyes of a child.
Friday
Let’s Celebrate…being foreign (Hebrews 11:13)
God has called us to a journey. It is a journey of discovery, a journey into God.
So we are only temporarily in any one place and we are soon on the move again, we are all foreigners. This gives us a special relationship with others who are seen as ‘foreign’: refugees, asylum seekers, guest workers, immigrants, newcomers, etc. In Bratislava most of us are foreigners. We foreigners need to learn about each other and about ourselves as well as this land in which we have temporary residence yet through which we are passing.
Saturday
Let’s Celebrate…being different (Galatians 3:28)
We have many differences of many kinds, but there is no difference between us when we think of our union with Christ. The many groups we fall into when lines are drawn (age, gender, race, culture, sexuality, colour, ability, religion) are as nothing when we focus on our relationship with God. Secure in this knowledge we are free to celebrate our diversity, the richness of our different views and approaches, the colour and beauty of our arts, the inspiration of our varied heritages, the insights into Christian faith that allow us to be different yet all made in God’s image.
Sunday
Let’s Celebrate…being travellers (Matthew 9:9)
Jesus called all sorts of people with the words, ‘Follow me.’ We all have our individual journey to follow and yet we are all together in our travelling. This Festival is part of our journey where we can receive bread and wine for the journey ahead, recognise our qualities, share our gifts, develop our skills, encourage each other and grow in faith. We will all need to help and be helped as we travel through good times and hard times. Some places on the journey will be familiar to all, some to only a few. The young will rush ahead and to the side with curiosity, the old will make steady progress. But we will travel well if we travel together, if we travel with vision, in hope and with love as we follow Jesus.
