At EMC's recent meeting in Ruse, Bulgaria, the plight of refugees coming to Europe was high on the agenda. The conversation continues and whatever assistance as can be provided will be, starting with a pastoral letter from the co-chairs of the Council, and a resource that may be useful when reflecting on the subject.
The UMC in Albania currently consists of three congregations – one in the remote mountain village Bishnica in the southeast of the country, one in the city of Pogradec, close to the Macedonian border and one in Albania’s capital Tirana. The leaders of these congregations aim to 'translate Methodism into Albanian' and to combine both: to share the Gospel and to address the challenges of today’s society appropriately and effectively. There are some encouraging developments: The work is growing (particularly in Pogradec and Tirana), indigenous lay people are taking over responsibility and are willing to be trained for their service and various social ministries have been established (language courses, sewing project for women, work with disabled people, cultivation of savage).
